WIN Stadium – Rust Remediation to Northern Grandstand

Contract Value: $5.3M

Duration: 29 Weeks (completed in 25 Weeks)

Completion: Feb 2019

The multi-purpose WIN Stadium, located on Harbour Street, Wollongong, is exposed to the severe marine environment. Unwashed salt deposits on the steel structure, together with other effects such as rainwater, allows the surface under the roofing to retain moisture, resulting in increased corrosivity. The existing thin gauge steel roof sheeting and purlins required replacing, in addition to the existing paint system that had severely deteriorated.

There were several localised corrosion perforations and uncovered penetrations on the primary roof structure which had to be restored, including the replacement of the structural cross bracing. The project also included installing new soffit lining and detailed flashing to the entire underside of the roof line as well as a new speaker system throughout the stadium.

Initially, the primary roof structure was to remain and all structural remedial repairs were to be completed on site. However, after extensive analysis Joss provided the client with an alternative solution which involved dismantling the roof structure. This method delivered cost savings to the client as well as providing a high quality finish of the coating application. This enabled Joss to complete the project four weeks ahead of program. Joss was congratulated on their approach to the challenging project by the Client and all stakeholders.
