Armoured Fighting Vehicle Workshop — Gaza Ridge Barracks

Location

Bandiana, VIC

CATEGORY

Joss Construction delivered the Armoured Fighting Vehicle Workshop at Gaza Ridge Barracks, North Bandiana, as part of a nationwide Department of Defence Armoured Vehicle Facilities Program, completing the $6.5 million project over a 44-week program under the Defence Medium Works Contract.

The purpose-built six-bay workshop is designed to accommodate armoured vehicles and includes a 30-tonne gantry crane, compressed air system, CO monitoring with automatic and manual exhaust systems, safety shower and eyewash stations, and a staff brew area. The structure features a structural steel portal frame with a single-pitch roof and cantilevered awning providing weather protection when roller shutters are open, Equitone and Colorbond external cladding, and an epoxy-painted floor finish across approximately 900m².

Delivered within an active Defence base in close proximity to operational workshops, the project required careful coordination with base stakeholders to ensure construction activities had no impact on surrounding operations. Additional environmental controls were implemented to protect a sensitive ecological area adjacent to the building pad.

The project encountered both contaminated soil and an extended wet weather period during construction. Joss worked constructively with Defence and project stakeholders to manage soil stockpiling, isolation and disposal, while proactively stabilising the building pad with compacted cement-treated rock to maintain program. A proactive upgrade to the perimeter concrete and vehicle ramp at no additional cost to the client delivered a more robust and functional finished product than the original design.
